Landscape

Experience the sweet fragrance of perennial bouquets freshly cut from your cottage garden, observe the floral color surrounding your patio as bright spring blooms transition to robust summer flowers, feel the texture of architecturally defined hedges as you walk along your front porch, or hear the sound a lone bumble bee makes as it works hard to keep your landscape thriving.  However it is achieved, landscapes provide the palette to invigorate our senses. Bring to life your planted landscape and explore with us the possibilities. With over 40 years of experience in residential and commercial landscape installation, Brookside Nursery will exceed your landscape expectations.

Watering Care & Planting Instructions

Watering Care Instructions:

Plants suffer more from improper watering than any other cause. Watering is a difficult gardening technique to master because it depends on many variables. The amount of water a plant needs varies with the kind of plant, soil, location, and the changing weather including temperature, humidity, and wind. It is easy to over or under water.

Never water without first checking the soil to determine if watering is necessary. To do this, test the moisture of your soil about 4-8 inches deep. Use a trowel to open an area beside the plant to check. If your soil is dry or only slightly damp the plant should be watered. Sandy soil will generally need to be watered more often than heavier clay soils.

Deep thorough watering will encourage a healthy root system whereas short and frequent watering will result in shallow less healthy root system. Each time you water apply enough water to wet the soil to the bottom of your root zone. Most container stock will have a root zone that will be planted about 8-12 inches deep.

Shrub and Tree Planting Instructions

Before You Plant

  • Dig a hole approximately 2 times wider and 1.5 times deeper than the root ball.
  • Loosen compacted soil around the planting area.

Soil Preparation

  • Blend your native soil 1:1 with Coast of Maine planting mix.

Adding Bio-tone

  • Sprinkle Espoma Bio-tone Starter Plus into the planting hole according to package directions.
  • Mix lightly into the soil to help encourage strong root growth and establishment.

Planting

  • Remove shrub from container.
  • Place the shrub in the hole so the top of the root ball sits even with ground level. If planting in heavy clay soil: plant so the root ball is slightly elevated by 1 inch above the soil level.
  • Backfill using the blended native soil and Coast of Maine planting mix
  • Follow watering care instructions
